Brass Lakshmi Idol on Lotus

Goddess Lakshmi, seated on her lotus

Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity and abundance, is at the heart of Diwali night. This handcrafted brass idol shows her in her classic four-armed form, seated on a two-tier lotus. It comes in two sizes, 3 inches (about 7.6 cm) and 4 inches (about 10 cm), and the detail holds up close at either: the sunburst halo, the layered jewellery, the pleats of her sari.

Which size?

• 3 inches: for a compact mandir, a pooja thali or a small prayer shelf.
• 4 inches: a little more presence on a larger mandir or a living-room shelf.

The details

• Four hands: a lotus flower in each upper hand; the lower right raised in blessing (abhaya mudra) and the lower left open in the giving gesture (varada mudra), with a stream of coins falling from her palm.
• Crown and halo: a tall, finely engraved crown framed by a sunburst prabhavali.
• Lotus pedestal: two tiers of petals, each with engraved veins.
• Antique gold finish: darkened recesses bring out the carving, even at a small size.

For Diwali Lakshmi Puja

On Diwali night, Lakshmi is traditionally worshipped together with Lord Ganesha. She is made to match our Brass Ganesha Idol on Lotus in base and finish, in both sizes, and the pair is also sold together as the Lakshmi Ganesha Idol Set in 3 inches or 4 inches. Through the rest of the year she sits well in a home mandir or on a clean, raised shelf.

A thoughtful gift

A small brass idol is a traditional gift for Diwali, a griha pravesh (housewarming) or a wedding, and an easy one to send to family setting up a mandir in a new home.

Caring for your idol

Dust with a soft, dry cloth and keep it somewhere dry. Avoid water, and don't use brass polish or cleaners: they strip the antique finish that gives the carving its depth.
