The floating-candle centrepiece, back in stock and warmer than before. Our Lotus Urli set sold out in days. This is the same idea built around the Juhi urli, with four brass shankh diyas in place of the lotus diyas and warm orange glass in place of grey.
What's in the set
- 1 x Juhi Urli Gold - a wide, shallow hammered urli in a warm gold finish, made to be filled with water, marigold heads and floating tealights.
- 4 x Brass Shankh Diya - solid brass oil lamps shaped after the conch, the instrument traditionally sounded at the opening of a puja. Four of them carry the light outward from the urli.
- 2 x Orange Glass Votive Holder - textured orange glass in a brass frame. These give the arrangement its height and its warmest light.
Why seven pieces rather than three
A single bowl on a long table reads as an afterthought. What makes a festive table look prepared is repetition at a small scale - several low points of flame around one larger object. The four shankh diyas do that work, and the two orange votives lift the eye so the arrangement has a top as well as a middle.
Styling it
Fill the urli with water to about two-thirds, float marigold or rose heads, then add three to five floating tealights. Set the four shankh diyas in a loose ring rather than a square - the asymmetry reads warmer - and place the two votives at the outer edges so the light runs the length of the table. Out of season the urli holds beautifully dry, on a sideboard or an entry console.
Using the diyas
Fill each shankh diya about two-thirds with ghee or sesame oil and use a cotton wick. Brass warms as it burns, so set the lamps on a tray or a heatproof surface rather than directly on timber or linen.
Care
Empty and dry the urli after use; standing water will mark the finish. Wipe the gold with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. The brass diyas can be polished with a lemon-and-salt paste or brass polish, then dried completely - many families prefer to let puja brass darken and polish only before Diwali. Glass votives wash by hand.
